Polystyrene (PS) is a widely used thermoplastic polymer known for its rigidity, clarity, and ease of processing. It is a synthetic aromatic hydrocarbon polymer made from the monomer styrene, which can be solid or foamed. Polystyrene's versatility makes it a preferred material for a variety of applications, ranging from packaging to consumer products. One of the most common uses of polystyrene is in the packaging industry, where it is utilized for protective packaging materials, including foam peanuts, food containers, and disposable cutlery. Its excellent clarity and ability to be easily molded into thin, transparent films also make it suitable for food packaging, particularly in cases where visibility of the product is important. In addition, polystyrene is used in the construction industry for insulation purposes, particularly in the form of expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam, which provides excellent thermal insulation while being lightweight and easy to handle. Polystyrene's rigidity and ease of processing allow it to be used in the manufacturing of various consumer products, including toys, household items, and disposable items such as cups and plates. However, polystyrene is not biodegradable, and its environmental impact has led to increased scrutiny and efforts to develop recycling methods and biodegradable alternatives.
