Polyethylene

Polyethylene (PE) Materials: HDPE / LDPE / LLDPE Resin Portfolio

Polyethylene (PE) is the workhorse thermoplastic for modern packaging and industrial products. Longchang supplies a full slate of HDPE, LDPE, and LLDPE resins engineered for efficiency, durability, and consistent processing across blown & cast film, extrusion blow molding, injection molding, rotational molding, pipe extrusion and more. Our portfolio serves food & personal care packaging, industrial & chemical containers, consumer goods, healthcare, agriculture, automotive and construction applications.

Why Polyethylene?

  • Broad property envelope: excellent chemical resistance, toughness/impact, moisture resistance and electrical insulation; tunable melt index (MI) and density enable precise stiffness–toughness–clarity–sealability balance.

  • Process-friendly: PE runs efficiently on film, blow molding, injection molding, rotomolding and pipe equipment; comonomer choice (butene/hexene/octene) and molecular weight distribution tailor flow and mechanicals.

  • Regulatory & sustainability pathways: food-contact suitability is available by grade, and PE supports circularity strategies in film, rigid packaging and more.

PE Families & Performance Focus

HDPE — High-Density Polyethylene

What it’s best at: high stiffness-to-density ratio, impact resistance, ESCR (environmental stress-crack resistance) and chemical resistance for demanding, thin-walled or chemical-contact parts.
Typical conversions & uses: extrusion blow molding (jerrycans, drums, chemical/household bottles), injection molding (crates, pails, closures), pipe/ sheet/ thermoforming

Representative injection-grade data point (industry example): HDPE ~MI 6.5 g/10 min and density ~0.952 g/cm³ used for pails/industrial injection parts—balancing flow, stiffness and toughness. (Illustrative spec from a published HDPE bulletin.)

LDPE — Low-Density Polyethylene

What it’s best at: flexibility, clarity/optics, high sealability and easy processing—widely used in blown & cast films, coatings and laminations; often blended with LLDPE to widen the heat-seal window and optimize optics/handfeel.

LLDPE — Linear Low-Density Polyethylene

What it’s best at: superior puncture, tear and impact resistance—ideal for down-gauging and high-performance flexible packaging (stretch/shrink films, liners, heavy-duty sacks). Also used in injection and rotomolding where low-temperature toughness is critical.

Medical-Grade PE — Medical Polyethylene

Designed for healthcare packaging and device components, medical-grade PE combines biocompatibility, low extractables, and reliable sterilization performance with the processing efficiency of conventional polyethylene.

Processing Methods & Grade Direction

Film (Blown/Cast) — Film Grade PE Resin

  • LLDPE film grades: raise puncture/tear and abuse resistance for stretch, shrink, food and household films; blend with LDPE to tune opticals and sealability.

Extrusion Blow Molding — Blow Molding Grade

  • HDPE blow molding grades: designed for industrial/chemical containers, drums, household & personal care bottles, offering a lightweight, recyclable solution with robust ESCR.

Injection Molding — Injection Grade

  • HDPE & LLDPE injection grades: target closures, caps, pails, crates, toys and housewares, balancing stiffness, impact and cycle time—often at medium MI for filling efficiency.

Rotational Molding — Rotomolding Grade

  • LLDPE/MDPE platforms deliver broad processing latitude and impact durability for large hollow parts, tanks, outdoor assets

Property & Design Considerations

  • Melt Index (MI): lower MI supports film toughness and blow-molded part integrity; medium MI often preferred for injection molding to boost filling speed while retaining strength.

  • Density: higher density generally increases stiffness/softening temperature; balance against required toughness/impact and sealing.

  • ESCR (Environmental Stress-Crack Resistance): critical for detergents, chemicals and long-life containers; HDPE blow grades emphasize stiffness-ESCR balance.

  • Impact/Puncture/Tear: LLDPE film grades enhance abuse resistance and enable down-gauging to reduce material use.

  • Food Contact & Hygiene: select food-safe grades for direct food packaging; validate per applicable regulations and end-use conditions.

Markets & Applications

  • Packaging (Food & Personal Care): stretch/shrink film, pouches & liners, blow-molded bottles and closures; PE packaging protects products through the value chain while enabling lightweighting.

  • Industrial & Chemical: HDPE drums, IBCs, jerrycans and lubricant/chemical bottles that demand ESCR, impact and dimensional stability.

  • Consumer Goods & Healthcare: toys, storage, housewares; medical/healthcare packaging and components subject to appropriate grade selection and compliance.

  • Agriculture, Automotive & Construction: films/liners, tanks and components benefiting from chemical resistance, low-temperature toughness and processability.

Quick FAQ

Q1. How do I choose between HDPE, LDPE and LLDPE?
Match resin to conversion process and performance goals: LLDPE for film toughness/down-gauging; HDPE for blow-molded chemical containers and rigid parts; LDPE for sealability and optics in films/coatings.

Q2. What MI/density should I target?
Lower MI/higher density often support blow-molded strength & ESCR; medium MI helps injection fill/throughput; film MI depends on line and down-gauging targets. Validate by trials.

Q3. Can PE be used for food-contact packaging?
Yes—by grade. Select food-safe PE grades and confirm compliance versus intended use and local regulations.
