Natural gas accounts for more than 50%! What does it mean behind the change of PetroChina's oil and gas structure?

At present, China's carbon emissions are still in the historical stage of "high total amount and high increment".China's carbon emissions from energy activities are about 9.8 billion tons in 2019, accounting for about 87 percent of the total carbon emissions of the whole society, according to the report "China carbon Peak Research before 2030". In the context of the "double carbon" goal, energy companies are duty-bound to help the energy industry achieve the vision of carbon reduction and complete the green transformation.

On May 20 this year, PetroChina released the 2020 Corporate Social responsibility report. According to the report, PetroChina's domestic natural gas production exceeded 130 billion cubic meters in 2020, and natural gas accounted for more than 50 per cent of the oil and gas structure for the first time. From "giving priority to oil production" in the past to the fact that low-carbon natural gas resources exceed heavy-carbon oil resources, this is not only a historic breakthrough, but also a phased achievement in the process of exploring green transformation in the energy industry.

The transformation of energy enterprises, "gas exceeding oil" is just the beginning.

The green transformation of energy enterprises is faced with two problems, one is to increase energy supply, the other is to reduce carbon dioxide, which is an opposite contradiction. Energy dominated by coal and oil has been used on a large scale, but it is not environmentally friendly. Hydrogen energy, biomass energy and other new energy can meet the choice of human sustainable development, but limited by technological bottlenecks and other reasons have not been used on a large scale.

In comparison, like coal and oil, natural gas, as a primary energy, is regarded as the most realistic choice for the current energy transformation because of its clean and economical characteristics.

But this can only reduce carbon emissions, not carbon neutralization. To emit the resulting carbon, an offset mechanism is also needed to offset the new carbon.

In order to comprehensively promote green transformation and achieve the goal of "double carbon" as soon as possible, PetroChina has incorporated "green and low carbon" into its development strategy for the first time. It also formulates the green and low-carbon development path under the condition of "3060", and preliminarily determines the overall deployment of the three steps of "clean substitution, strategic succession and green transformation".

The company has vigorously implemented the strategy of "stabilizing oil and increasing gas" to promote the rapid growth of natural gas production, which will increase to about 55% by 2025, which is in the leading level of the industry.

Give full play to the key supporting role of natural gas in the future energy system, increase the scale development and comprehensive utilization of geothermal resources, and gradually transform from an oil and gas supplier to a comprehensive energy company.

We will actively promote the Green Action Plan, vigorously implement energy conservation, emission reduction and clean substitution, strive to reduce carbon emissions, vigorously implement forestry carbon sequestration and CCUS, efforts to achieve carbon removal, and actively provide green zero-carbon energy to society.

In addition, PetroChina has also made great efforts to promote the use of digital technology to empower the industry in order to speed up the development and utilization of clean energy. It is expected that PetroChina will achieve a "carbon peak" around 2025 and basically achieve "near zero" emissions around 2050. To contribute to China's "carbon peak", "carbon neutralization" and global temperature control goals, so that beautiful China has both "appearance" and "temperament" will be just around the corner.

What about energy security under the low-carbon transition?

The green and low-carbon development of energy enterprises is a major trend, but the energy transformation must consider the overriding major issues of national security and energy security.

At present, China's overall energy self-supply rate remains above 80%, but the external dependence of oil and natural gas is still high, and the oil and gas field is still the focus of ensuring energy security in our country.

China's oil and gas output accounts for 50% and 70% of the country's total output respectively, and oil and gas output accounts for more than 60% of the country's output equivalent. it is not only the backbone of China's oil and gas development, but also the main force to ensure national energy security.

In 2020, in the face of multiple pressures such as the COVID-19 epidemic and the cliff drop in international oil prices, PetroChina's domestic crude oil output maintained a steady increase of more than 100 million tons, and the annual output of natural gas exceeded 100 million tons of oil equivalent and exceeded that of crude oil for the first time. Overseas oil and gas equity equivalent annual output maintained more than 100 million tons, forming a new pattern of "three 100 million tons". The output of crude oil has increased steadily, and the output of natural gas has exceeded that of crude oil, which has optimized the supply-side energy structure, and the "ballast stone" role of China's oil in ensuring supply has become more and more prominent.

Energy security is not only the political responsibility of PetroChina as a central enterprise, but also a livelihood project related to thousands of families. In the winter of 2020, under the influence of La Nina climate phenomenon, the temperature in most parts of China is lower than that in previous years, and North China has experienced the lowest and coldest weather since the 21st century. The guarantee and supply of natural gas faces major challenges.

PetroChina overcame the severe challenges brought by COVID-19 's epidemic situation, gave full play to the advantages of the integration of the natural gas industry chain, optimized the operation of production organization, strengthened the coordination, dispatching and working connection after the pipe network reform, and carried out efforts in all aspects of production, supply, storage and marketing. During the winter supply period, it produced 61.35 billion cubic meters of natural gas and supplied 97.93 billion cubic meters of natural gas to the market, an increase of 11.6% and 10.5% respectively over the previous year. Every effort has been made to ensure a stable supply of natural gas resources in winter and to ensure that people are warm through the winter. PetroChina has withstood the test of the high-quality development achievements of the natural gas industry.
